ABSTRACT: This article offers a
detailed overview of the life and
professional trajectory of Nés-
tor Almendros Cuyàs (Barcelona,
1930–New York, 1992), one of the
-
disputed reference in the expres-
sive use of natural light. An Acad-
emy Award winner and three-time
nominee, Almendros collaborated
with some of the most prestig-
ious directors of his time, includ-
ing François Truffaut and Éric
Rohmer, and left his visual mark
Meryl Streep, Dustin Hoffman, and
Catherine Deneuve. The text also
highlights his family roots in Al-
madén, inherited from his father,
the educator and reformer Her-
minio Almendros, a connection he
maintained throughout his life de-
spite distance and successive ex-
iles. The article examines how his
childhood in Barcelona during the
Spanish Civil War and the post-
war years, followed by his time in
Cuba, from which he was forced
into exile due to his opposition
to the Castro regime, shaped his
ethical and aesthetic sensibilities.
His subsequent period in France
and his eventual consolidation in
the United States are presented as
stages that reinforced his commit-
ment to formal austerity, working
with limited resources, and using
natural, logical, and organic light.
Finally, the article underscores
-
ry work, where he denounced the
repression of the Castro regime
against the homosexual commu-
nity and political prisoners.
